Current state evaluation is critical to success with any cloud transition initiative. Outcomes of this stage include: 

- Understanding the current state business and IT architectures
- Cloud opportunities and priorities list
- IT impact assessment and readiness for cloud (IT costs, capabilities, risks)
- Business case development

Architectural Assessment

- Review and assess the current state business and IT architecture
- Identification of any significant technical gaps and/or risks that should be addressed
- Assessment of existing applications, services and infrastructure for cloud appropriateness
- Define relevant connections between business activities and IT services
- Review of existing data classification and cyber-security policies
- Ensure a common language exists for cloud and cloud use


Cloud Opportunities & Priorities

- Assess service model options for use and impact
- Ensure the value of each deployment and service model is understood (including cost/benefit)
- Establish a target cloud model for applications and services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, alternate)
- Choose 5-10 cloud priorities (services/applications) to develop capability and validate business case


IT Impact Assessment

- Itemize and categorize areas of impact to the IT organization including financial. (changes to budget structure), process, people and tools
- Establish action plan and horizon for implementing required changes
- Communicate and discuss cloud approach with existing leadership and staff
- Determine approach for managing legacy services during transition


Develop the business case

- Create the cloud business case (including TCO model), strategy and policy document
- Determine the partnership model and initial software, platforms and/or technology required
- Engage and communicate strategy and business case
- Finalize initial investment level for cloud activities
